What is oxidative stress and how to prevent it | Skincare with antioxidants

“Oxidative” refers to the element oxygen. The oxygen we breathe consists of oxygen molecules.During metabolism these oxygen molecules are split.

This creates particles that react extremely quickly with other substances in our body. They are called radicals. Radicals destroy important cell components and negatively influence cell metabolism.

Our skin then looks unhealthy, it appears sallow and tends to wrinkle. This is oxidative stress.

Normally, the body has mechanisms to bind free radicals and make them harmless.

However, various factors such as UV radiation, smog and poor nutrition can lead to an imbalance, so that there are too many radicals in the body. So-called antioxidants fight oxidative stress.

The most used in cosmetics are vitamin A1 (retinol), vitamin C and ubiquinol (coenzyme Q10). In addition to binding free radicals, each of these substances has other specific benefits. Plants like algae contain effective mixtures of antioxidants.
